Henry was born in a prison in Arizona to Emma Swan, who gave him up for adoption to give him his best chance, and he was later adopted in Boston by Regina Mills when he was only a few months old. Regina took him to live in Storybrooke, Maine, a town completely separate from the rest of the United States, a town that could never be found on a map, and wouldn't appear to exist to an outside observer. It was created with magic, by the dark curse that Regina cast in order to find her happy ending, and residents of the town can never leave without dire consequences. For most of his early childhood, it seems that Henry had a fairly pleasant childhood with Regina, but all of that changed significantly at the age of ten when Henry was given a storybook (filled with fairytales) by his teacher, Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White) as a way to comfort him when he was pondering his biological family tree and feeling more and more alone, like something was wrong or missing. It was then that he began to realize the stories in the book were actually quite real, and that his adoptive mother was the Evil Queen.
